• Research and Price Parts: Obtain accurate pricing for replacement parts from suppliers and vendors. Negotiate for competitive rates whenever possible.

• Estimate Labor Costs: Calculate the time needed for repairs based on industry standards and the shop's labor rates.

• Create Detailed Estimates: Prepare comprehensive reports outlining the repairs needed, parts required, estimated labor hours, and total cost for customer approval.

• Communicate Effectively: Clearly explain the repair process and estimated costs to customers. Address their questions and concerns in a professional and courteous manner.

• Strong Math Skills: You can't build a house without a blueprint, and you can't write an accurate estimate without a firm grasp of math. This includes proficiency in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, as well as an understanding of formulas for calculating material quantities and labor hours.

• Attention to Detail: A keen eye is crucial for spotting every dent, scratch, and damaged part. Missing even a minor detail can throw off the entire estimate, leading to customer dissatisfaction and potential financial loss for the shop.

• Knowledge of Collision Repair Procedures: Understanding the typical repair process for different types of damage is essential. This allows you to accurately estimate the labor hours needed for each step, from part removal and replacement to painting and detailing.

• Parts and Labor Cost Research: You need to be a pricing pro! Researching current market rates for parts and labor ensures your estimates are competitive while still remaining profitable for the shop. Familiarity with industry databases and vendor pricing is a plus.

• Excellent Communication Skills: Estimates aren't just numbers on a page – they're a conversation starter with the customer. The ability to explain the repairs clearly, answer questions confidently, and build trust is essential for customer satisfaction.

• Greet and welcome customers: When they arrive (or call), answer questions about services. 
• Schedule: Repair/estimate appointments, coordinate drop-off and pickup times. Prepare and present repair estimates or explain cost/time expectations (or coordinate with estimators/technicians to do so). 
• Act as liaison: Between customer, shop technicians/estimators, and insurance companies — including handling insurance claims or paperwork if needed. 
• Provide: Customers with updates on repair status and timeline, communicate any delays or changes. 
• Handle: Billing, invoicing, payments, and insurance-related financial paperwork. 
• Maintain accurate customer and vehicle records, repair orders and documentation. 
• Offer general front-office / administrative support: answering phone calls, managing reception area or lobby, scheduling, data entry, paperwork filing, customer communications. 
• Address customer concerns or complaints: work to resolve issues and ensure customer satisfaction.

• Strong customer-service skills: polite, friendly, patient — able to deal with potentially stressed or upset customers. 
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills: able to explain technical repair information / insurance/estimate details clearly to customers. 
• Good organizational skills, detail-oriented, able to multi-task (manage appointments, paperwork, calls, follow-ups) in a busy, fast-paced environment. 
• Basic computer skills: comfortable using shop-management software, scheduling tools, Microsoft Office / record-keeping system. 
• Basic understanding of auto body repair processes or willingness to learn — helps when explaining repairs, interacting with technicians and insurance adjusters. 
• Ability to work under pressure, handle multiple tasks, maintain professionalism even when busy or during difficult customer situations. 

• Disassemble and reassemble classic vehicles carefully, documenting parts, hardware, and condition.
• Perform metalwork and fabrication, including rust repair, patch panels, cutting, welding, and panel alignment.
• Diagnose structural issues and determine proper repair or replacement methods according to vehicle age and original specs.
• Repair or replace mechanical systems such as suspension, steering, braking, fuel systems, and drivetrain components.
• Fit, gap, and align body panels to correct factory-style tolerances or improved custom specs.
• Prep vehicles for paint, including sanding, priming, blocking, and correcting body imperfections.
• Restore or refurbish original components when possible (trim, hardware, brackets, interior pieces).
• Install new or reproduction parts while ensuring compatibility and proper fitment.
• Use proper tools and equipment (welders, sanders, metal shaping tools, lifts, measuring tools).
• Maintain a clean, safe, organized work area and record all tasks performed.
• Communicate repair needs, progress, and unexpected issues to the shop manager or estimator.
• Ensure all repairs are structurally sound, safe, and completed with pride and craftsmanship — not just cosmetic fixes.

• Strong knowledge of classic car systems, both mechanical and structural.
• Metal fabrication ability: welding (MIG/TIG), shaping, patching, grinding, rust removal.
• Strong bodywork skills, including filler work, sanding, blocking, and panel straightening.
• Ability to read schematics, old wiring diagrams, and factory repair manuals.
• Patience and precision — classic restoration requires slow, careful, detailed work.
• Problem-solving ability for custom or one-off repairs where no OEM parts or instructions exist.
• Basic knowledge of paint prep and refinishing processes (even if not a painter).
• Experience using fabrication tools: brake, shear, shrinker/stretcher, hammer and dolly, etc.
• Strong attention to detail and pride in craftsmanship.
• Professionalism and safety awareness: proper lifting, welding safety, PPE use, fire-prevention practices.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team, communicating progress and obstacles.
